Do these 3 steps and watch your skin stay trouble-free

We often look to skin care as a solution for bad skin days, but why wait for trouble to come when we can take steps to keep them away?

Below we highlight three things you can do right that will actively prevent skin damage.

Do them and they’ll save you dollars and heartaches from having to fix more problems later. Psst, step number three doesn’t require you to spend at all!

1. Wear sunscreen, always

Unless you are getting ready for bed, you should always be wearing sunscreen. Sun protection is a non-negotiable essential to great skin, yet it is a step that many tend to neglect or miss. It may take an extra minute a day to apply but doing this every day can shave years off your appearance by preventing signs of premature ageing.

Always wear sunscreen

The sun emits UVA and UVB rays that are harmful to our unprotected skin.

UVA rays have longer wavelengths that penetrate deeper into our skin. This results in ageing effects such as collagen breakdown, fine lines and pigmentation. Once ageing signs start to show, it becomes much harder to eradicate and resolve.

UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are mostly responsible for sunburns. When exposed to the sun in the long run, both UVA and UVB rays can lead to skin cancers.

That is why it is important to cover up and apply sunscreen that can both protect against UVA and UVB rays. We recommend applying and reapplying sunscreen as frequently as needed and every 2 to 3 hours if you are going to be outdoors.

2. Cleanse your face twice a day

Cleanser 1

Cleansing regularly is essential in more ways than one.

Firstly, it keeps your skin free from dirt, oil and impurities contributed by sweat, pollutants and makeup. If unremoved thoroughly, these impurities and dead skin cells buildup clogs our pores, resulting in skin problems such as acne, irritation and sensitivity.

Secondly, a gentle and hydrating facial wash can help to clean, soften and hydrate your skin to prep it for better absorption of your skin care products. This ensures that your serums and anti-ageing treatments work well for your skin, leading to better results.

Face cleansing

We recommend doing a morning cleanse and double cleansing at night, especially if you have makeup on.

Cleansing in the morning is beneficial as it helps to remove any skin care residue while refreshing your skin for the day ahead. If you have very dry skin, you may opt to skip the facial wash and do a gentle rinse with water instead.

Do double cleansing by using a makeup remover at night followed by your facial wash to thoroughly remove any makeup or sunscreen residue at the end of the day.

Remember, your journey to fresh, radiant skin starts with getting the first step right. By paying attention to cleansing, many skin problems can be prevented, and you may find your skin care products working better for you than it used to.

3. Get sufficient beauty sleep

Beauty sleep

Yes, beauty sleep is not a myth.

When we are asleep, this is the time when our skin works to repair, restore and rejuvenate. Cutting back from sleep causes your skin to have lesser time to restore itself, which then affects your skin health and overall appearance. Some of these include worsening dark circle conditions and a dull appearance that looks fatigued.

A study in the Clinical and Experimental Dermatology journal found that those who slept 7-9 hours a day had lower skin ageing scores compared to those who slept less than 5 hours a day. Those with more sleep showed 30% greater skin barrier recovery compared with poor sleepers and significantly better recovery from exposure to UV rays. The better sleepers also rated themselves as more attractive in a self-evaluation.1

Furthermore, being sleep deprived may result in higher levels of stress, leading to more breakouts and skin sensitivity. Feeling well-rested will boost your confidence and energy levels, which translate to better moods and happier expressions too.

Tip: Put together a skin care routine at night for ‘effective’ beauty sleep. Find out which DR’s Secret products can help improve your skin while you sleep.

These may be easy steps but do them diligently daily and you will be able to feel the difference. Time to troubleproof your skin!
