Are there times when you find that your skin is just not improving, or your skin care products doesn’t seem to be working?
It can also be discouraging to have sudden breakouts when you think you’ve nailed your skin care routine.
We understand the frustration. Here we list reasons as to why your skin care routine may not be working to help you identify the cause and improve your routine. Read on to find out the possible reasons and how you can solve the problem!
Why your skin care routine is not working
1. Your skin needs a break

Sometimes, our skin just needs a break! Adding in many intensive products such as serums and ampoules may seem effective, but it is important to adjust your skin care routine according to your current skin condition. If you find your skin still irritated or breaking out after an extensive skin care routine, chances are it may be overwhelmed by the intensive formulas.
This is the time to go back to basics. If your current routine includes several intensive products, try switching to a simpler skin care regime for a change. Focus on the basics: Cleanse, Hydrate and SPF! This gives your skin a chance to breathe and allows it to focus on rebuilding its skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier helps to protect the skin from external aggressors and locks moisture in. Your skin is also better able to absorb the luxurious actives from concentrated serums with a healthier skin barrier.

2. Skin care products take a while to work

Skin care products are not miracle workers that work overnight. The product actives need some time to take effect, which is why being patient is key!
Our skin cells require at least 28 days to go through a full renewal cycle, although this period may extend as we age. With consistent application, you should be able to see noticeable improvements in your skin in about a month, and significant results in three to six months. For some, the results may take a little longer. Those with severe skin problems would need more time and those with a good skin foundation might notice results in just a matter of weeks.
Be consistent and keep up with your skin care routine. You’ll surely see your skin appear healthier and rejuvenated in the long run!
3. As the weather changes, so does your skin

When the weather and seasons change, our skin condition changes as well. Some of you may notice your skin becoming more sensitive, showing signs of redness, itchiness and even breakouts during season transitions.
The lightweight skin care routine that you used in the summer would likely not work for your skin when autumn comes around. We suggest you assess your skin condition during the season transitions and adjust your routine according to the weather and temperature.

4. Your routine does not suit your current skin condition

Here’s the truth: our skin condition changes as we age. What we need in our 20s is vastly different when we are in our 40s.
For example, the hydration routine that you swear by in your younger days may now use some help from ingredients such as peptides and antioxidants to slow down signs of ageing.
It is important to review and tweak your skin care routine according to its latest condition. We’ve created a general guide with curated routines for different skin types where you can take your pick.
